So after the acropolis museum we got some groceries and went home to make a nice dinner of Greek salad, sandwiches and tomato soup. Originally we were going to make grilled cheese but we couldn't figure out how to turn on the stove. And then we couldn't figure out how to turn on the microwave either. So cold sandwiches and cold tomato soup it was. It was still quite delicious if we do say so ourselves. The next morning we got up and turned on the hot water so we could take a shower/bath. BAM BAM BAM! All of a sudden we hear this Indian man shouting at us from behind a close mystery door, 'what you doing?! It 17 degree out! It's so hot! So hot! You try kill me?! So hot, 17 degree out!'. Apparently, in Greece the water themometer also controls the house temp which we didn't know. Nor did we know that our heat also changed the temp of the renters upstairs! We thought we had turned the heat knob off but apparently this man didn't think so. We aren't the best at working Greek appliances (hence cold dinner) so I guess we messed it up. So after apologizing profusely, and running showerlessly out of the house, we headed to Athens to see the acropolis and beyond. The bus ride was the usuall but the 1.5+hrs commute wore on us a bit. We got to Athens, avoided the men selling tomato toys and got our tickets to go in to the sights. We accidently bought REALLY expensive orange juice (we drink this every day at some point, it's our natural airbourne so we can try not to get sick).
Thought on the acropolis- lots of construction. The temple of Athena was dissembled so you couldn't really tell how it truly would look. The theater of Dionysus was really cool. It was really crazy to imagine sitting there to watch show waaaayy back in the day. The antiquitey of everything really astounds you. The Parthenon was huge- it is missing a lot of the freizes along the top that I expected it to have, we also wished we were able to go inside. No dice. My personal favorite was the temple of Poseidon. It had no construction, had lots of art still remaining (although the statue outside were replicas ) and you could walk around the whole thing easily and see inside. Very historical.
We were pretty tired so we headed back to kifissia for a little Internet and coffee. Stelios and Johanna met us back a the house and we all went out to dinner at a local place called mythos, also the local beer. We tried the beer, tastes like heiniken. We decide to stay low key and went home early around 1230. Greece is like Barcelona that they have seista and don't go out for dinner until 10-1030. We all slept very lat the next day (Melanie woke up early as the exception...) and it was rainy and cold. The forcast said it may even snow. Very crazy. We went food shopping so we could make a big lunch all together. Johanna cooked for us an amazing Greek chicken dinner which was really really good. We made pizookie for them as dessert but oddly cookie mix is very rare here (def no break and bake) and the kind we found was more of a chocolate chip bread like mix. Still delicious as a pizookie though! We found a&w rootbeer at the 'american' market we went to and had to get them even though each can was €2. So worth it.
We went out for drinks at 1030 or so and met up with one of stelios' friends Kosovosis or something like that. Melanie and I wanted to adopt all the shivering stray dogs who were curled up anywhere dry. They are everywhere- you feel so bad for them. We got savory and sweet crepes after the drinks which were amazing. One of my favorites of the trip. We went to bed and this morning got up for coffee and then are going to make another big lunch today- Johanna is going to make a Greek potato dish and we might attempt to make them monkey bread.
We decide stelios' favorite English phrase is 'what else' while Johanna's is oh my god, or it's very nice :). We tease them, and then they laugh at our sorry attempts to speak Greek. Tonight we are going out with a couple more of stelios' friends and then we head to the airport tomorrow morning and will be in Venice by tomorrow night :). We heard from our wolfpack we traveled with in Barcelona and they just arrived back in canada. Barcelona seems so long ago! We still might meet up with them at Niagra falls sometime. I'm sure I'm missing all sorts of stuff but we will have free wifi in Venice so we will have much more access there. This might be our last time in our good old friend Gloria's Internet and coffee place. Hope everyone had a great Halloween!
